Membership Agreement

I understand that the Healthy Minds Cooperative is a grassroots not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to address vital matters identified by those who have living experience with mental health issues/concerns, and/or brain disorders.

I also understand that identified priorities of the Healthy Minds Cooperative are:

  1. Better access to mental health services, supports, etc.;
  2. Public education regarding mental illness and brain disorders;
  3. More extensive participation of those with living experience in the design, development, delivery, and evaluation of mental health services;
  4. Providing peer support and advocacy services for end-users of mental health services and their families; and
  5. Developing better connections to existing community services.

 

I understand that a one-time, one (1) share subscription of $5.00 entitles me to membership in the Healthy Minds Cooperative, the right to vote at any general and/or annual meeting of the Healthy Minds Cooperative, and to be eligible to be elected to the Board of Directors.

Membership Guidelines

Preamble

The Healthy Minds Cooperative values self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity, and upholds the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility, and caring for others. To put its values into practice, the Healthy Minds Cooperative is guided by seven principles adopted by the international cooperative community: (1) voluntary and open membership; (2) democratic member control; (3) member economic participation; (4) autonomy and independence; (5) education, training, and information; (6) cooperation among cooperatives; and (7) concern for community.

Eligibility

Membership in the Healthy Minds Cooperative is voluntary and open to all persons willing to accept the responsibilities of membership. Any individual having living experience with mental health issues, and/or an interest in the topic of mental health, is eligible to become a member. A membership agreement must be filled out and approved by the membership committee, and a share purchased at a cost of $5.00.

Rights

Members have full voting rights (one vote per member). Members are eligible to serve in elected office of the Healthy Minds Cooperative. Members have the right to receive monthly newsletter information from the Healthy Minds Cooperative.

Responsibilities

Members are responsible to attend members’ meetings, including the Annual General Meeting, to discuss and vote on issues of importance to the Healthy Minds Cooperative. Members are responsible to participate in the Healthy Minds Cooperative through volunteer work and assist in the recruitment of new members.

Termination of Membership

Members can give one month’s written notice of termination of their membership at anytime. Subject to the regulations and the by-laws, a member may be eligible to a refund of the $5.00 held to his or her credit in share capital.

Ways to Lose Your Membership

Membership can be revoked with cause by a two thirds (2/3) vote by the Board of Directors. “Cause” can include activities such as misrepresentation, falsifying expense claims, etc.
